Why Wood?

Be The Best You Can Be

Baseball played with wood bats is truest to the integrity of the game and at the highest levels it will always be with wood bats. Wood bats were the standard until the aluminum bat was introduced as a lower cost alternative to wood. Over time, the aluminum bat has evolved into what is known today as metal bats or composite bats which are now being constructed from a variety of metal and composite materials.

The focus of metal and composite bats has shifted from affordability to performance enhancement, resulting in a change in player development and how the game is played. Since metal and composite bats are more forgiving, with a larger sweet spot that has a trampoline effect, players are not trained to swing with proper mechanics. These players are recognized by scouts as having a metal bat swing. The majority of these players are not able to make the transition to wood. It is for this reason that scouts for professional baseball leagues prefer to see players play with wood and the top amateur summer leagues play with wood bats.

Safety

Players are trained to perceive and react to batted balls based on the speed of the pitch and the mechanics of the batter. However, newer metal bats and composite bats can create a trampoline effect that returns more energy to the ball than a wood bat and may propel a ball far faster than any player expects. A more dangerous consideration is the inconsistency of the trampoline effect. Depending upon where the ball contacts the “sweet spot,” the trampoline effect may be more or less effective. This creates a dangerous situation for the fielder because their perceptions and the reality of the speed of the ball are inconsistent, causing a delayed reaction. Delayed reaction time leads to an inability to avoid injuries.

Safety concerns associated with the use of metal bats and composite bats in amateur baseball has lead to a movement back to wood bats in recent years.

Genuine Gratification

Hitting well with a wood baseball bat is challenging yet achievable. The sweet spot is localized on a wood bat, so players must be precise in making contact with the ball. The wood bat is vulnerable to breakage, so players must see and evaluate the pitch early in the delivery to avoid swinging at a bad pitch. And the wood bat is solid, so players must use good mechanics, strong weight shift, and perfect timing to hit well.

As players master these challenges, they will have a strong feeling of accomplishment since their achievements will reflect their actual advancements, rather than the tool that they use. Players maintain their motivation when progressing in their skills with wood; and they take practice and training methods more seriously. It is the way to become as good as one can be while taking pride in doing so.
